Fishing Dispute Law Threatens Power Outage, British Jersey Rebuts

Fishing dispute law threatens power outage, British Jersey rebuts

Refers to each other as a violation of the Brexit agreement

At the beginning of this month, Britain refused to issue fishing licenses in its waters to all French fishing vessels, which caused French fishermen to worry about their livelihoods. France threatened to cut off power to Jersey last week. The island’s foreign affairs minister accused it of “unacceptable” and “disproportionate,” and alleged that it violated the Brexit agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union.

French Minister of European Affairs Bonnet warned last Tuesday that the government was ready to put pressure on the UK on the fishing issue, saying that London had violated the Brexit agreement. Before the UK officially leaves the European Union on January 1, 2021, the fishing rights of EU fishing vessels in British waters have severely hindered negotiations between the UK and the EU. In May of this year, more than 50 French trawlers demonstrated in the Port of Jersey, and Britain sent a navy to confront.

The United Kingdom stated earlier that only 12 new licenses would be issued to EU small fishing boats for 47 applications. Jersey issued 64 complete and 31 temporary licenses, but rejected 75 applications.
